Kidnappings surge in Southern Kaduna

The women wing of Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) has said that no fewer than 27 women and four boys were kidnapped by bandits in Southern Kaduna and appealed to the authorities to come to their rescue2.

The group said that the kidnappings occurred in different locations within the last three weeks, and that some of the victims were still in captivity while others had been released after paying ransom. The group also said that some of the victims were raped, tortured, or killed by their abductors2.

The group condemned the spate of kidnappings in Southern Kaduna, which they said had become a nightmarish passage for residents and travelers. They accused the government of failing to protect the lives and property of the people, and called for urgent intervention to end the insecurity in the region2.

The group also urged the people of Southern Kaduna to remain vigilant and united against the menace of banditry, and to support each other in times of distress. They appealed to religious and traditional leaders to pray for peace and stability in the area2.

EU invests €5.4 million on teachers’ training in Nigeria

The European Union (EU) has announced the investment of an additional €5.4 million euros in building the capacity of teachers in the Northwest. This is in line with its commitment of reducing the high number of out-of-school children in the region by improving access to quality education and empowering youths in the region3.

The investment is part of the EU-funded Supporting Out-of-School Children through Non-Formal Education project, which is implemented by Plan International Nigeria in collaboration with other partners. The project aims to reach over 100,000 out-of-school children aged 6-17 years with non-formal education opportunities in Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara states3.

The project also seeks to train over 5,000 teachers on child-centered pedagogy, inclusive education, psychosocial support, and life skills. The project will also provide learning materials, furniture, water and sanitation facilities, and solar power systems to over 500 learning centers across the five states3.

The EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ketil Karlsen, said that the EU was committed to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to achieve universal basic education for all children. He said that education was a fundamental human right and a key driver for sustainable development3.
